704 North Court Street Medina, OH 44256 Tel: 330.725.3926 Fax: 330.725.3000 www.unitedwaymedina.org News Release For Immediate Release: April 26, 2006 Youth Services Awards honors students during National Volunteer Week Medina, Ohio – United Way of Medina County and the Medina Sunrise Rotary join together to honor 59 high school juniors and seniors for their exceptional commitment to community service in Medina County during National Volunteer Week April 23-29th. The 59 students received thunderous applause as their parents and school administrators congratulated them on 12,138 total volunteer hours of their time, talents, and energy during the 2005-2006 school year. Students from Black River, Brunswick, Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Highland, Medina County Career Center, Medina, and Wadsworth High Schools also received commendations from the Ohio State representatives Calvert, Gibbs and Patton, as well as Senator Amstutz for their volunteer contributions to the community. Keynote speaker, Juvenile & Probate Judge John Lohn addressed the students about the importance of continuing to volunteer in the next stages of their lives and how community involvement is a sign of future leaders and success. Medina Sunrise Rotary President Dennis Neate also spoke to the students about the importance of civic involvement to Medina County. Three students were selected as recipients of a $1,500 scholarship based on their volunteer involvement both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as educational goals and career aspirations. The scholarship winners are: Elizabeth Grenfell of Medina, Lyndsey Planicka of Brunswick, and Christopher Senesi of Hinckley. The awards were distributed by County Commissioner & United Way Board Chair, Stephen Hambley and Barbara Dzur, United Way VP of Volunteer Services.
