United Way of Medina County Announces Board Class of 2006

Medina, Ohio – United Way of Medina County is pleased to announce its Board of Trustees’ class of 2006. This year’s class of eight includes county-wide leaders in the business and the education sectors. 

Medina County Commissioner & Chairman of the Board, Stephen D. Hambley, will induct the new members at the United Way of Medina County Annual Meeting on May 24, 2006 at Weymouth Country Club. Hambley, congratulated Jim Gerspacher, Nominating Committee Chair for gathering such an impression slate of candidates that will bring a wealth of knowledge and partnerships to United Way. 

New to United Way’s Board of Trustees but not to their involvement in the Medina County, the new board members are: Cindy Fuller, Certified Financial Planner and Branch Manager, Merrill Lynch; Roger Hassler, Realtor, Russell Realty and President, The Hassler Group LLC; William Hutson, Executive in Real Estate & Administration, Westfield Insurance; Robin Laubaugh, President, Wadsworth City Council; Dr. Jeffrey Weaver, Superintendent, Medina City Schools and Roger Wright, Principal, Wadsworth Middle School. 

Renewing their commitment to building a stronger Medina County by returning for a second 3 year term on the Board of Trustees are Ty Bretz, Vice President Commercial Lending, Key Bank and Amy Demlow, Attorney, Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston Ltd. 

United Way of Medina County helps create lasting changes in our community that improve lives by bringing the community together to identify and address needs. Through the generosity of those who live and work in Medina County, United Way provides funding to 28 partner agencies and supports community initiatives like 2-1-1 First Call for Help. Board of Trustees Class of 2006 Biographical Information

Ty Bretz is returning for a second 3 year term. Ty works for Key Bank as VP in Commercial Lending. He has been on the board since 2004 and has served as a member of the UWMC community investment panel and the UWMC finance committee. He lives on Green Tree Circle in Medina and will be getting married this June. Ty has committed to be the VP for Community Investment in 2007-08.

Amy Demlow is returning for a second 3 year term. Amy is an attorney with Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston Ltd. She lives with her husband, Sean and family in Medina. Amy is the Community Investment Chair for the Attainable Housing Panel and is currently assisting with the Fund Raising Strategic Plan taskforce. Amy has committed to be the Chairman for United Way of Medina County Board of Trustees in 2008-09.

Cindy Fuller is a Certified Financial Planner and Branch Manager for Merrill Lynch on Medina Rd. She lives with her husband, Don, on Cedarwood Lane in Medina. Cindy has a degree in business management from the University of Akron. Cindy brings a wealth of community experience serving on the boards for Medina General Hospital Foundation and the Medina County Performing Arts and most recently as the Chairman of the Medina Area Chamber of Commerce board.

Roger Hassler is a realtor with Russell Realty and President for The Hassler Group LLC. Roger and his wife live on Indian Creek Drive in Litchfield. Roger serves as a director for Medina County Board of Realtors and is a member of Medina Rotary and Medina Area Chamber of Commerce. Roger has his degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri and a M.B.A. from Southern Illinois University.

William Hutson is an executive with Westfield Insurance Company in Real Estate and Administration. He lives with his family in Westfield Center where he serves as the Village of Westfield Center Law Director. He received a B.S. in Business Administration from Ferris State University and received his law degree from Capital University Law School. Bill also serves as President of the Board for Northeast Ohio Dance, is a FOS Captain for Boy Scouts of America and is a member of the Medina County Port Authority. Bill has served on our community investment panel for several years.

Robin Laubaugh is currently serving as President of the Wadsworth City Council and for Wadsworth Art & History. She is a homemaker and lives with her family on Woodland Ave. in Wadsworth where she is active with WHYS – Lincoln, the Child Study Club and Salvation Army. Robin received her B.S. in Finance from Brigham Young University and has been a Certified Financial Planner since 1984.

Dr. Jeffrey Weaver is the Superintendent of Medina City Schools and lives with his wife on Fairfax Drive in Medina. Jeff received his B.A. at Rollins College and his Ph.D. from Ohio University, and has served as a board member for the Glynn County United Way and Greater Topeka United Way. Currently he is a member of the Medina Area Chamber of Commerce, Medina City and Medina County Economic Development committees.

Roger Wright is currently the principal of Wadsworth Middle School and lives with his family on Silvercreek Rd. in Wadsworth. He received his B.A. at Slippery Rock and his M.A. from Ashland and has a background in communication, education and business administration. Roger is a member of the Wadsworth Lion’s Club and will be an active and valuable member for UWMC as we unite with the Wadsworth community.

Youth Services Awards honors students during National Volunteer Week

Medina, Ohio – United Way of Medina County and the Medina Sunrise Rotary join together to honor 59 high school juniors and seniors for their exceptional commitment to community service in Medina County during National Volunteer Week April 23-29th. The 59 students received thunderous applause as their parents and school administrators congratulated them on 12,138 total volunteer hours of their time, talents, and energy during the 2005-2006 school year. 

Students from Black River, Brunswick, Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Highland, Medina County Career Center, Medina, and Wadsworth High Schools also received commendations from the Ohio State representatives Calvert, Gibbs and Patton, as well as Senator Amstutz for their volunteer contributions to the community. 

Keynote speaker, Juvenile & Probate Judge John Lohn addressed the students about the importance of continuing to volunteer in the next stages of their lives and how community involvement is a sign of future leaders and success. Medina Sunrise Rotary President Dennis Neate also spoke to the students about the importance of civic involvement to Medina County. 

Three students were selected as recipients of a $1,500 scholarship based on their volunteer involvement both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as educational goals and career aspirations. The scholarship winners are: Elizabeth Grenfell of Medina, Lyndsey Planicka of Brunswick, and Christopher Senesi of Hinckley. The awards were distributed by County Commissioner & United Way Board Chair, Stephen Hambley and Barbara Dzur, United Way VP of Volunteer Services.
